Mangrove Afforestation Project in Guangdong Province was registered as China’s first mangrove carbon sink that meets VCS, the most extensive voluntary emission reduction certification standard
Blue carbon refers to the capacity of marine and coastal ecosystems to sequester and store carbon. Such an early application of the concept in China is a positive sign and could help attract investment and promote the marcerization of mangrove and marine restoration.
The Zhanjiang Mangrove Afforestation Project developed 380 hectares of mangroves planted in the protected area from 2015 to 2019 following VCS and CCB standards and is expected to offset 160,000 tons of carbon dioxide emission between 2015 and 2055. The Beijing Entrepreneur Environmental Protection Foundation plans to purchase the first 5880 tons of carbon credits issued by the project.
According to the Blue Carbon Initiative, ecosystems such as mangroves, tidal marshes, and seagrass meadows cover only 2-6% of the surface area covered by terrestrial forests. However, they sequester carbon dioxide at about two to four times greater rate than mature tropical forests.
