WANG Yao

Professor WANG Yao is the Director General of International Institute of Green Finance (IIGF), doctoral supervisor at the Central University of Finance and Economics, the Director of the Research Center for Carbon Neutrality and Finance, researcher at the Institute of Finance and Economics and Expert and Member of the Academic Committee of Beijing Finance and Economics Research Base. Wang Yao serves as Deputy Secretary General of Green Finance Committee (GFC) of the China Society for Finance and Banking, Advisor of the Green Securities Committee (GSC) of the Securities Association of China and Vice Chairman of Carbon Neutrality Committee of China Energy Conservation Association.

She is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Leadership, University of Cambridge (CISL), Expert on the Advisory Board of the Sustainable Finance Programme at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment at the of Oxford University, and Consultant to the Luxembourg Stock Exchange. In 2021 she was appointed Chief Technical Advisor of the UNDP Biodiversity Finance Project BIOFIN in China and previously served as the Chief Advisor of Research and Promotion on SDGs Impact Financing for UNDP China.

In 2013, Wang Yao has been granted the New Century Excellent Talents Support Program of the Chinese Ministry of Education. Wang Yao has nearly 7 years of experience in investment banking. She did her post-doctorate at Bank of Beijing from 2008 to 2010. From 2010 to 2011, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Economics of Harvard University, a Visiting Scholar in the Harvard Environmental Economics Program and Harvard China Project. Her research interests focus on green economy, sustainable finance, green finance and climate finance. Since 2006, she has published more than 100 papers in high-level journals, led more than 90 domestic and foreign research projects such as key projects of the National Social Science Fund, and published 22 monographs. Among them, “Carbon Finance: Global Vision and Distribution in China” (China Economic Publishing House, 2010), and Climate Finance (China Economic Publishing House, 2013). which are cutting-edge works in this field. She also co-authored “Research on Carbon Financial Mechanism Supporting China’s Low-Carbon Economic Development” and won the 7th China Excellent Publishing Book Nomination Award. She was an anonymous reviewer for journals such as Energy Policy, Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change, and Financial Research. In 2019, Wang Yao was awarded by Asiamoney China Green Finance Awards 2019 “the Outstanding Contribution to Development of Green Finance in China”.
